How MyPolicium Works
Understanding the logic behind our educational actual cash value benchmarks.
Behind the Calculator
The MyPolicium Actual Cash Value (ACV) calculator is designed to lift the veil on how vehicle valuations are generally structured. When an insurance company determines a vehicle is a total loss, they don't guess the value—they follow a systematic process based on market data.
Our calculator mimics this logic to provide an educational benchmark. We use a combination of standard industry depreciation curves, high-mileage penalty algorithms, and regional market adjustments to give you a realistic starting point for your research.
Why Estimates Are Ranges, Not Guarantees
You will notice that our calculator always provides a valuation range, never a single guaranteed number. This is intentional and reflects the reality of the auto insurance claims process.
No algorithm can perfectly predict what your specific insurer typically will offer. Insurance companies rely on third-party valuation software (such as Mitchell or Audatex) that pulls exact, real-time sales data from local dealerships. Because the used car market fluctuates daily, the exact payout can shift based on current supply and demand.
Why Real Settlements Vary
If your actual settlement offer differs from our benchmark, it is usually due to one of the following critical factors:
- Pre-loss Condition: Adjusters physically inspect the vehicle or review shop photos. Prior damage, worn tires, or a stained interior will significantly reduce the payout. Conversely, a vehicle in showroom condition will command a premium.
- Exact Trim Levels: A base model versus a fully loaded "Touring" or "Platinum" trim of the same car can have a valuation difference of thousands of dollars.
- The Comparable Market: Insurers base your payout on "comparables"—similar vehicles currently for sale within a 50-100km radius of your postal code. If your exact car is currently scarce in your local market, the value might be higher than a national average.
- Recent Major Upgrades: Standard maintenance (oil changes, brakes) does not increase value, but if you recently installed a brand-new engine and have the receipts, the adjuster can manually increase the settlement.
Using This Data Practically
We encourage you to use our calculator as a research tool, not a negotiation weapon. If your insurer offers a number near the low end of our range (or below it), ask them to provide their valuation report.
Review the comparables they used. Are they matching the correct trim? Are they deducting too much for prior wear? By understanding the factors that influence value, you can have a calm, objective, and informed discussion with your adjuster about the true market value of your vehicle.
